The operating room can be a frightening place for a patient, surrounded
by individuals whose job it is to provide you with a safe and successful
surgical experience. Do you know the role of all those professionals
in delivering care during your surgery? Do you know who will be
in the room during your surgical procedure? The surgeon of course,
and the anesthesiologist, but who are all the other people?
The surgical assistant will stand opposite from your surgeon and
assist with the procedure. The operating room will have one registered
nurse whose job is to circulate during the surgical procedure, meaning,
his/her duties are to provide needed supplies, equipment or even
specific patient care during the surgical procedure. A scrub nurse
will be in the room to pass the instruments to the surgeon and the
assistant.
Surgical assistants demonstrate a great deal of very sophisticated
decision-making and problem solving within the framework of the
technically oriented tasks that they perform, with regard both to
safeguarding a patient in the operating room environment and to
facilitating the technical aspects of the operative intervention.
Surgical Assisting is a profession that requires highly specialized
knowledge and skills, specific training and more. Additionally,
clinical training “at the table” is required to reach
the advanced skill level requirements. The Surgical Assistant is
a vital member of the operating room team. The success and efficiency
of the operation depends on having well trained, certified professionals
in these roles to optimize the patients safety and care.
